Prioritization sounds like such a simple thing, but true prioritization starts with a very difficult question to answer, especially at a company with a portfolio approach: If you could only do one thing, what would it be?

The primary goal of  portfolio management is to prioritize the company's resources and capacity in order to deliver upon  the defined and committed strategy. Today’s pace of innovation, shifting market and customer demands will not allow us to always plan long term. The turn around is faster, parametres shifts and you must navigate in an often unreliable landscape.

The importance of continuously monitoring the overall portfolio is essential. Equally important is the prioritization of new projects and programs based on business criticality, remembering the ongoing initiatives and any impact that a re-prioritization may lead to for those activities already in flight.

When a program is initiated the success rate is closely linked to the management's ability to take ownership of the dependencies, risks and opportunities that are predefined as part of the business case.

In an ideal world a program is initiated with a clearly defined sponsorship which increases the chance of success. Unfortunately the reality is that a program often lacks this element of perseverance from management  and managing such a program requires a high level of persistence and experience from the program manager .
