The Project Success Enigma: A Structured Approach to Troubleshooting Projects

Ways of Working

When a lawnmower or outboard engine fails to start, our first instinct is to pull harder on the starter cord. Similarly, when the project doesn't go as planned, working harder becomes the natural response.

In the engine world, mechanics follow a structured approach to troubleshooting engines by systematically ruling out causes of failure.

Accordingly, when project results are poor and time and cost estimates indicate a potential overrun, structured project troubleshooting serves as an alternative to requesting overtime.

Fixing problem projects begins with defining success. Based on that definition, we can identify common failure modes and assign remedies.

There is no need to wait; conducting introspective with the core team on a regular basis has a preventive effect.

In this session, we will look at:

  • The project elevator pitch technique is used to capture the essence of a project and create a project directive: a picture of what success looks like.
  • The project success paradigm, an operational model for evaluating performance
  • Common failure modes, causes, and solutions.
