The Carbon Capture Project at the Norcem Brevik Cement Plant

Business Acumen

With the CCS Project, the cement industry moves from being part of the problem to being part of the solution. Emissions from the cement industry represent 6-8% of the total CO2 emissions every year. Concrete, where cement is the main ingredient, is necessary to develop a sustainable society. Carbon capture is viewed as the most realistic measure to achieve the zero emission goal for the cement industry. Norcem Brevik’s ambition is to complete the industry’s first full-scale carbon capture plant by 2024.

Norcem and HeidelbergCement have developed technology and project plans to build a full scale CCS plant at the site of the cement plant in Brevik. It will be the first cement plant to achieve full scale carbon capture in the world.

The Norwegian Government proposes to support and partly fund carbon capture at Norcem’s cement plant in Brevik. Norcem could have the world’s first COcapture facility at a cement plant. The CCS technology comprises a capture element, a transport element and a storage element. CCS is a relevant technology for capture of COemissions also from other industries such as power plants based on coal and oil, as well as from steel and petrochemicals plants. In the Governement proposals they call CCS the Longship Project, and includes both capture, transport and storage of CO2 also from other CO2 emissions industries.

The total project costs are estimated at NOK 25.1 billion. This includes both the investment and ten years of operation. The Government’s part of these costs are estimated to be NOK 16.8 billion, approximately two-thirds of the project’s cost.
